Are you looking for something more interesting to do than dinner and a movie? How much can you get to know a person if you are both in the dark in a room full of strangers and you are both staring at a screen? Its’a actually a pretty bad idea for a first date and not a good idea when you are just getting to know someone. I’m not sure why so many people like to go to the movies since you have to rush to get there, you end up paying almost ten dollars for a ticket. There might be a screaming baby you have in back of you. There might be someone that is in back of you that is kicking your head. There is often an old lady sitting near you that has on way too much perfume. The people behind you are talking and ruining the movie for you. If you get there late then you might not end up sitting near each other. I do love going out and getting dressed up but there are so many more interesting things to do in Philadelphia besides just going out to a move.
If you stay at home then you don’t have to worry about anyone else’s schedule. You don’t have to worry about someone else’s screaming baby or nasty smelling perfume. You won’t have someone behind you kicking you in the head. You can start the movie when you want and it is going to be far less expensive, especially if you have Netflix then if you spend all that money on a babysitter, parking, gas, tickets and maybe soda and a popcorn.
So what can you do for your date night in the city? Well first, if you live in Philadelphia then you can always go to theaters in philadelphia or even museums in philadelphia if you are looking for date night ideas. I just love the philadelphia museums. It is so much more refined to go to the theater and see a live performance. I would love to go in a special limo from Philadelphia. It is a much more dynamic experience as well to go to the theater than to to movies. It is more expensive to go to the theater than seeing a movie though. You can often get good deals on theater tickets if the theater has a theater lottery. When I lived in New York city I lived near all the Broadway shows. Often, if I had nothing to do on a Friday or Saturday night, I would stop by one of the tickets booths and see if they had a lottery for tickets that night. Every show works differently so it is best to call ahead and ask about this before you just head out to the ticket booth. I remember my mom and I saw Chicago for only $25 each and we had really good seats. I simply went the Friday morning at exactly 10 am and they started their ticket lottery for tickets that night. I also went to see Avenue Q and they had a ticket lottery as well. Their lottery started at 6 pm the evening of the show. People would gather around and put their name in a bucket. Then about 10 people plus a friend got to buy tickets for $25 each and they were really good seats. I think I had to wait 4 times for Avenue Q since I did not win the lottery the first few times.
Avenue Q is such a funny show and you would think it would be a great show for kids to watch but it really is not since they talk about all kinds of indecent subjects that are not appropriate for kids. I think it was probably one of the most entertaining shows out there on Broadway in New York city. I was so glad I attempted three times to win the ticket lottery there because that ended up being one of my favorite shows.
I also got to see Wicked at the lottery. I got very lucky that time since I had a friend from out of town for just two days and he didn’t have many other opportunities to see Wicked over the few days. We waited at the lottery at the ticket office for Wicked and there must have been 200 people there. They called out about 20 names plus a friend. I felt very blessed that night and it was a great show.
I also got to see Twyla Thwarp’s rendition of a Billy Joel musical called “Moving Out”. This was a great show if you are a Billy Joel fan since they play all the Billy Joel songs and it is a life story about some friends in the era of time. I won the lottery and got a front row and in the dead center seat. I got to feel the sweat of the dancers I was so close. At the end of the show we were all up giving the dancers a standing ovation and the lead dancer came over to me and kissed my hand. That had never happened to me before and it was incredibly exciting! I can still remember what the expression was on everyone’s face around me since it was such an incredible moment for me.
I did end up seeing another show in a ticket lottery but I can’t remember the name of it. When my friends came to town they ended up buying tickets for all of us to see the same show.
One show that I really like but that never seem to have ticket lotteries is the Blue Man group. I first saw Blue Man at the Luxor in Las Vegas about 9 years ago. It is easily one of the best and most entertaining shows I have ever seen. It is also one of the most interactive. They did all kinds of crazy stuff during the show such as painting members of the audience in paint. They also did a special drum performance where they were drumming on these big huge forms and paint was splattering all over the place. The people in the first ten rows were given rain ponchos in order to protect themselves from the paint. It was such an unbelievable sight. The Luxor is a much better place to watch the show since I also saw it in New York and it is in a little tiny theater and just does not have the same impact and is just not quite worth the money because of the small venue. So if you are in Las Vegas anytime soon, I would highly recommend going and buying tickets for the Blue Man show. I’m not sure if they still play it at the Luxor but if it is still there then you should definitely see it.
If you are flying into Philadelphia to go and see some shows then you can take the train or you can fly in. If you are flying into Philadelphia then you should do some research about philadelphia airport parking. If you are not sure where you want to stay then you can do some investigation about hotels and places to stay. There are many hotels in Philadelphia with a wide variety of prices. I really like the loews hotel philadelphia but it is not the least expensive option out there. When you are in Philadelphia you will surely want to try one of the famous cheese steaks that they have in the southern part of the city. You can also try some Cheesecake Philadelphia. I don’t know why cream cheese is so important to this city or why the most famous foods here usually have something to do with cheese. I have never actually had a true cheese steak. When my mom was here she actually had a cheese-steak and she asked the people how she should have it and they told her she should have her cheese-steak with the processed cheese that comes out of a can. To me that sounds really disgusting but she really was enjoying it.
